"Simply being a guest on David Letterman’s show has been a highlight of my career," Cobert said when the announcement was made. "I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave’s lead. I’m thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth."
Colbert's appearance next week will give CBS another chance to see how he plays with Letterman's audience.
Network brass hasn't made it clear what kind of host Colbert will be. He's spent years playing a character on the Colbert Report, though he's unlikely to maintain that persona when he takes up the Late Show gig.
CBS is reportedly hoping that Colbert will attract younger viewers, as Fallon did for the Tonight Show.
