Actor hurt in London stage gun mishap

LONDON, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Actor David Birrell sustained a serious eye injury during an on-stage firearms mishap at London's Donmar Warehouse theater.

An investigation is under way into why the gun used in a duel scene in the production of Stephen Sondheim's musical "Passion" Saturday didn't shoot blanks as expected, The Daily Telegraph said.

Birrell, 35, who plays Colonel Ricci in the show, was taken to University College Hospital where he was treated for his injury. The Telegraph did not report his condition.

"During the matinee performance of 'Passion' on Saturday, David Birrell sustained an injury to his eye for which he is currently being treated in hospital," a spokesman told the newspaper. "Our priorities are to David's well-being and recovery; and to theatergoers who have purchased tickets for performances in the coming days."

Performances of the show are canceled through Wednesday.
