New Yorker shut out at mag awards

NEW YORK, May 2 (UPI) -- The New Yorker was the big loser in this year's National Magazine Awards competition in New York, failing to win a single time despite nine nominations.

On the flip side, New York magazine won five awards Tuesday night from among its seven nominations. New York won for design, profile writing, interactive features, general excellence and the best section, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

National Geographic won awards for photography and general excellence among magazines in the over-2 million circulation category.

Foreign Policy won the general excellence award for magazines with a circulation between 100,000 and 250,000.

Christopher Hitchens won the commentary award for his work in Vanity Fair, which also won the public interest award.

Rolling Stone, Wired, Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, Beliefnet.com, Esquire, O, Glamour, GQ, Paris Review, City, The Nation, The Georgia Review and Departures also went home winners.
