John Mayer loving life with his Trio

NEW YORK, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- John Mayer has gone from solo artist to band guy with the release of "Try!," a live album with his group the John Mayer Trio.

The lineup also features well-credentialed drummer Steve Jordan (Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones) and bassist Pino Palladino (the Who, Jeff Beck, Simon & Garfunkel), and Mayer says it's an association he cherishes.

"I'd rather do this than anything else right now," he explains. This is where I have the most discovery to do. Every time we pick up our instruments, I know there's a song to take out of the sky. There's so much untapped music between us that's really on a true musical scale, that's where I should be spending most of my time."

Jordan and Palladino are helping Mayer record his third studio album, "Continuum," which will be released in 2006.

The Trio, meanwhile, is performing a concert Wednesday night in New York City that will be Web cast live on AOL.com, as well as playing Thursday on CBS' "The Late Show With David Letterman." Appearances on NBC's "Late Night With Conan O'Brien" and CBS' "The Early Show" are scheduled for December.
