He was widely respected and admired for his series of 10 plays, most set in Pittsburgh, about the African American experience throughout the 20th century.

The final play in the cycle, "Radio Golf," premiered last spring. He won Pulitzers for two plays in the group, "Fences" in 1987 and "The Piano Lesson" in 1990.

Wilson was diagnosed with liver cancer in June and soon after, in a rare tribute, New York's Jujamcyn Theaters announced it was renaming one of its Broadway theaters the August Wilson Theater.

Wilson is survived by his wife, Constanza; his two daughters, Azula and Sakina; three sisters and two brothers.
