Italians don't want DeNiro as citizen

VENICE, Italy, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- A group of U.S. Italians has complained Robert DeNiro should not become an Italian citizen because the Hollywood actor's gangster roles damage Italian images.

Sons of Italy, a Washington lobbyist group for Italians living in the United States, petitioned Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi Thursday to cancel DeNiro's citizenship, Britain's Mirror reported Friday.

"He has done nothing to promote the image of Italians. He has damaged their image by constantly playing criminal roles that tarnish their reputation," said Joseph Sciame, Sons of Italy president.

The actor, famous for playing Mafia heavyweights in films such as "The Godfather" and "Once Upon A Time In America," is set to receive his citizenship in September at the Venice, Italy, Film Festival.

The Italian Ministry of Culture confirmed the actor's citizenship award may be delayed because of the complaint.

DeNiro qualifies for citizenship through his great-grandparents, who immigrated to New York from the village of Ferrazzano in central Italy.

Ferrazzano Mayor Giovanni Gianfelice reportedly is furious over the potential delay.

"The government cannot change their mind. If they do, I will personally travel to Venice and make Robert De Niro a citizen of Ferrazzano." Gianfelice said.
