Johansson loved 'Pearl,' 'Lost' scripts

NEW YORK, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Scarlett Johansson says her acclaimed films "Lost in Translation" and "Girl With a Pearl Earring" have one thing in common: great scripts.

The 19-year-old actress earned Golden Globe and British Academy Award nominations for both roles.

Talking to UPI's Karen Butler, Johansson called "Girl With a Pearl Earring," a drama set in 17th century Holland and based on Tracy Chevalier's best-selling novel, "amazing."

"It was so visually stimulating," she said. "In your head, when you were reading it, you could see everything right in front of you. It was so atmospheric. There was nothing excessive about it."

As for Sofia Coppola's contemporary comedy, "Lost in Translation," she said: "It was totally different and incomparable and the script was so beautiful."

"I think that people appreciate that it's not dumbed-down," she said. "It resonates with people because it's that feeling of being in a place where you're reassessing your happiness and your lifestyle and then, feeling like ... 'Oh, something is missing, and I don't know what it is.'"
