Mixed-culture Bible exhibited at Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J., Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Princeton University will offer visitors a chance to view a rare 13th century French manuscript book in an exhibit this spring.

The book, known as the Picture Bible, has pictures illustrating ways Christian, Muslim and Jewish cultures used storytelling to define themselves and their values. It will go on display at the Princeton University Art Museum on March 6.

The Picture Bible has been unbound for research and study and will offer visitors an opportunity to view 26 of the book's original pages in a single exhibition that will run through June 6.

"It is remarkable that this sumptuous illuminated manuscript still exists to depict not only the stories of the Old Testament, but also their various interpretations by three different faiths," said Susan M. Taylor, director of the museum. "We are exhibiting it along with arms and armor, religious artifacts, and everyday domestic items similar to those seen in the pages of the manuscript."

The book, believed to have been commissioned by Louis IX of France, is on loan from the Morgan Library in New York.
