U.S. orders bio-detectors

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 17 (UPI) -- The U.S. military has ordered more than 100 biological agent detection systems from the U.S. subsidiary of Britain's Chemring Group.

Chemring Detection Systems, which has headquarters in North Carolina, said the contract was issued by the Edgewood Contracting Division of the Aberdeen Providing Grounds Contracting Command. It is worth $49 million.

The company's joint biological point detection Systems and initial fielding packages will be used aboard ships and Army Stryker nuclear-biological-chemical reconnaissance vehicles.

"The JBPDS provides automatic detection and identification of airborne biological agents at very low levels, triggers local and remote warning systems and communicates threat information over standard communication systems," the company said, and multiple systems can be networked for command and control from a single operational interface.

The detection systems, which will be manufactured at a Chemring facility in North Carolina, are scheduled to be delivered over a one-year period beginning this coming December.
