Under the award from DGA, MBDA will be responsible for the risk-reduction phase of the missile's development.

The terms and monetary value of the contract from DGA weren't disclosed.

The MMP is expected to replace the Milan wire-guided anti-tank missile, which has been operational since 1974. It weighs about 15 pounds and an export "success" for MBDA, which has headquarters in France.

"The Milan missile is a major export success and the MMP program will allow French and European industry to continue offering its customers a complete family of high-performance missile systems," DGA said.
