SYLMAR, Calif., Sept. 23 (UPI) -- The Egyptian navy has given L-3 Ocean Systems of California a $24 million contract for low-frequency sonar systems.
If all options of the fixed-price award were exercised, the total value of the agreement would be $27 million, the company said.
L-3's Low Frequency Active Towed Sonar is a long-range, active/passive variable depth sonar used by surface ships to detect diesel-electric submarine threats. It's small, lightweight and can be easily installed on any class of ship without structural modifications, the company said.
Featuring an operator console, power amplifier, towed body and handling system and designed with an open architecture configuration, LFATS can be used in a stand-alone mode or integrated into a ship's combat system.
