Jordan Islamists back Iraq suicide attacks

AMMAN, Jordan, March 31 (UPI) -- A top Islamic leader in Jordan expressed Monday support for suicide attacks waged by Iraqis against British and U.S. forces.

Hamza Mansour, secretary-general of the Islamic Action Front, told United Press International the suicide attacks were legitimate and justified as they came in retaliation to "the massacres committed by the U.S. and British invading forces against the Iraqi people who do not possess sophisticated planes like the invaders."

Mansour projected that more suicide attacks will be carried out against the coalition forces in the coming few days.

Washington said four U.S. troops were killed in a suicide attack near An Najaf two days ago. Iraqi officials put the toll at a much higher figure.

Baghdad said an estimated 4,000 Arabs entered Iraq to take part in the fighting against U.S. and British forces, and the Palestinian group Islamic Jihad announced that dispatched militants to commit suicide attacks against coalition troops.

Mansour, who heads the largest opposition party, urged Arab governments to reactivate the treaty of joint Arab defense and open their borders for Arab volunteers to go to Iraq.
