Iraq parliament backs Saddam candidacy

BAGHDAD, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Iraq's parliament Monday unanimously approved President Saddam Hussein's candidacy for another 7-year term. A referendum is to be held Oct. 25. Saddam was nominated by the Revolutionary Command Council, Iraq's highest body. In the 1995 referendum, which excluded the autonomous Kurdish area, Saddam received 99 percent of the vote.
