The Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southwest Energy Team was awarded the turbines, totaling 1,500 kilowatts, for the first wind installation to power a Marine base.

According to the announcement, Southern California Edison provided all of the engineering, financing, design and construction services. The services provided by SCE cost an estimated $6.1 million.

Using wind power instead of fossil fuel, it's estimated the base will save up to $515,000 per year.
