Philippine government urges conservation

MANILA, Philippines, July 11 (UPI) -- Philippine leaders have proposed a short work week to cut energy use.

Just like many municipalities in the United States, the Philippine House of Representatives reportedly suggested recently that government offices operate four days a week instead of five. The lawmakers would still work 40-hour weeks but in four days instead of five according to the proposed plan, Xinhua news agency reported.

Marcelino R. Teodoro, a Philippine lawmaker, encouraged his peers to adopt House Resolution No. 629, which he sponsored. By imposing a four-day work week, energy and fuel that would have been used could be saved.

According to Teodoro's plan, government employees would work up to 10 hours a day for the four days a week they would be in their offices.

"Employees would still be working for the same 40 hours per week, the work duration per week required of those in government service," Teodoro told Xinhua.

Reylina Nicolas, a member of the House Committee on Energy, said the proposal should be considered, especially in light of a proposal from oil companies to raise the prices of petroleum products in August.
