RWE renews partnership with municipalities

ESSEN, Germany, April 18 (UPI) -- Germany's RWE Innogy will continue to work with municipalities on renewable energy.

The firm, along with its subsidiaries, RWE Rhein-Ruhr in Essen, RWE Westfalen-Weser-Ems in Dortmund and Lechwerke in Augsburg, signed a letter of intent with its municipal partners to jointly develop and implement projects for renewable energy generation.

The letter extends an existing cooperation agreement. A contract on the joint construction of a coal-fired power plant at Hamm had been signed with municipal partners in February 2008.

"We are convinced of the success of such cooperation schemes, not only when it comes to conventional power plants, but also for renewable energies. In this way we can do something about the looming supply gap and reduce CO2 emissions at the same time," said Juergen Grossmann, chief executive officer of RWE.

The cooperation is designed to cover national and international projects in the areas of wind power, biomass, geothermal energy and biomethane plants. RWE said its goal is to reach an agreement with interested companies and municipalities on the key points by the fall of 2008.
