The Interfax-Ukraine news agency reported Tuesday that according to operational data, the transit of natural gas through Ukraine during January-October 2006 was 106 billion cubic meters, down 5.9 percent, or 6.6 billion cu.m. over the same period last year.

The data was made public by Ukrtranshaz, which runs Ukraine's gas transport system.

"Transit of gas to Europe over the 10 months was down 7 per cent (6.9 billion cu.m.) to 91.9 billion cu.m., while transit to CIS countries grew by 2.2 percent (0.3 billion cu.m.) to 14.1 billion cu.m," the news report said.

It attributed the decline in volumes to unusually high temperatures in Europe and the spat between Russia and Ukraine over gas pricing that led Gazprom to cut off supplies temporarily to Ukraine; that move affected the flow to the rest of Europe.
