Lena Dunham slams Jezebel for unretouched Vogue photos exposé

NEW YORK, Feb. 21 (UPI) -- Lena Dunham is not too happy with feminist website Jezebel.

During an interview with Grantland's Bill Simmons the Girls creator and star condemned the magazine for their "monumental error" in offering $10,000 to someone who could find "unretouched" photos of Dunham's photo shoot for the February issue of Vogue.

"That was messed up," the 27-year-old actress told Simmons. "I think Jezebel is really smart and funny, I think it's just like once you've been attacked that way it's hard to enjoy. It's hard to enjoy once you feel like they've made such a monumental error in their approach to feminism."

Hours after Jezebel offered the money, the site posted six raw images of Annie Leibovitz's original shoot with the actress along with a piece stating each and every detail that was altered in the photos.

Dunham went on to say that the whole situation "felt gross."

"I didn't talk to [editor Jessica Coen] who did it directly, but I can't imagine the reaction made her feel particularly great," she said.

"Once they did post the unretouched images of me that looked so similar -- I was kind of scared to see the unretouched images of me," she continued. "I was like, 'maybe I'm delusional in this and I don't look how I think I look.'"

Dunham added that she doesn't understand why the magazine decided to run the story when their article on retouching even stated that all images had been minimally altered.

"Instead of saying, 'Hey, we kind of [expletive] up, these pictures aren't that retouched, Lena enjoy the Vogue spread you've been excited about since you were 8 years old, [Jezebel] was like: 'She's not retouched, but she could have been.' It was this weird almost like political maneuvering that I just had a lot of trouble respecting."
