Chelsea Handler presided over a successful night raising money and awareness for AIDS research at the annual amfAR gala Thursday, while Sharon Stone kissed bidders to get them to spend more money at the event's auction.

Handler poked gentle fun at the well-received Dallas Buyers Club, which itself deals with AIDS and teased everyone from Kenneth Cole to Cheyenne Jackson.

"Now a lot of people think that this is a fight that has been fought and already won, or that AIDS is only a problem in other countries, or that Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto cured AIDS down in Texas... but they didn't," she joked. "Too soon?"

Handler donated $100,000 of her own money before the auction even began, while honoree Aileen Getty and her sister tossed in $1 million each.

"I'm going to give $100,000," Handler said. "I hate going to these things -- you get a little buzz going and then whoopsy! I have a traveler's check in my car."
