Nov. 19 (UPI) -- A student at Liberty University in Virginia was shot and killed by campus police Tuesday after he became involved in a physical altercation in an off-campus women's dorm.

Joshua Hathaway, 19, was involved in an incident, the details of which have not been released, that left him dead early Tuesday morning, said Lynchburg Police Lt. Dave Gearhart.

Liberty University officials said Hathaway attacked a campus police officer, who was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital for treatment of his injuries and later released.

The university said there was no ongoing concern for the safety of students and classes were to continue as scheduled.

"The Liberty University community is deeply saddened by this tragic event and is prayerfully supporting all those impacted," said LU Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. in a statement.
