America's obesity epidemic has spread to our dogs

As America gets fatter, so do America's dogs. According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, more than half of American dogs are overweight.

“Dogs today have butlers and maids,” said "Dog Whisperer" Cesar Millan. “They don’t hunt for their food anymore, but they should work for food.”

Part of the reason is that dogs aren't meant to have such carbohydrate-heavy diets. Dogs apparently only have a particular need for carbs while pregnant or nursing, otherwise adapted to raw foods like "a whole rabbit."

But much of the reason is "lazy owners who confuse food with affection and attention," Millan said.

Just like humans, obese dogs are at risk for high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, and respiratory diseases. And overweight dogs have less chance of being adopted.

In the meantime, doggie fat camps have been springing up across the country to help Fido lose a few pounds.
