Former teen idol Tiffany Darwish opened up to Fox 411 about what it was like to be a pop star back in the 80s.

Darwish, 41, became famous in 1987 following the release of her remake of "I Think We're Alone Now." Back then, the singer known simply as Tiffany was dating teen sensation Jonathan Knight from "New Kids on the Block," but claims they were forced to keep the relationship on the down low to avoid disappointing the fans.

"It wasn’t acceptable [to flaunt our relationship] then because if you were a teen heartthrob, they wanted to see you be very available so I think we really had a harder time back then. I’m sure there is still some backlash when the younger teens start to date, but [for us] it was on the down-low.

When people found out, the girls usually take the hit more because the guys have these die-hard girl fans, but it is a different situation when you have young teenage girls. I had girls that were all about my jean jackets and what type of perfume I was wearing, but a few years later when I was dating [Jonathan], they were scouring mad at me."

Fox contrasted Darwish's love story with current relationships among teen stars like Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez who are not afraid to put their on-again off-again romance out in the open. Darwish, on the other hand, admits that dating within the business is not he only thing that has changed.

"Partnering with brands seems to be very important nowadays," she said. "And those opportunities seem to be awesome when they come your way." The singer reached commercial success by touring America performing in shopping malls.

"I think before, in the '80s, it was more about fashion and music videos and a lot of radio," she said. Getting out there and the fans learning who you were and your music.”

“Now there are so many different avenues like social media, but it’s also cool as an artist to get the opportunity to step outside myself and show a different side of myself as a personality,” she added.
