When CeCe Bruce, who works at a Steak 'n Shake in Indianapolis, saw a $446 tip from one of her regular customers, a woman identified only as Miss Jo, she thought it must have been a mistake.
Miss Jo's bill only came to $5.97.
"I said 'Oh my gosh Miss Jo, I'm not taking that!' And she said, 'Yes, you're taking it' and I said no and she said 'You need to take it'," Bruce told WTHR.
"I didn't think I was worth $400 but, you know, she feels I am," she joked.
Bruce's general manager said she deserved the recognition.
“She stays late, comes in early. Whenever we need her, she's here. So she deserves it more than anyone,” Greer Gooley told Fox 10. “It just lets servers know that you work hard and it does pay off. There are people out there that [if] you do your job people reward you for it.”
Bruce, who works as a full-time waitress at the restaurant, is also a student. She said she really needed the money to help pay her bills.
“All the worries that I have are kind of like out the door for the day, you know? It makes you look at life a little more positively,” Bruce said.
