The adorable picture shows Charlotte wearing a red coat, shoes and bow with a pink scarf and backpack. Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, took the photo on Charlotte's first day of nursery school.

"Wishing a happy third birthday to Princess Charlotte - thank you all for your lovely messages!" Kensington Palace captioned the post.

The Westminster Abbey official Twitter account said the church was ringing its bells in honor of Charlotte's birthday.

"Shame it's raining but we're ringing the bells to mark the birthday of HRH Princess Charlotte of Cambridge," the account said.

Charlotte's birthday comes just three days after William and Middleton's seventh wedding anniversary. The couple also share two sons, 4-year-old Prince George and Prince Louis, who was born April 23.
