Jamaica publishes list of safe toilet paper brands

KINGSTON, Jamaica, April 17 (UPI) -- Government regulators in Jamaica have published a list of safe brands of toilet paper.

The Bureau of Standards Jamaica released what was described as a preliminary list Monday of brands that tested as reasonably bacteria-free after testing samples, The (Kingston) Gleaner reported. As a result, retailers were rushing to return other brands to distributors.

The government investigation began after The Sunday Gleaner published an investigative story in February that said some brands contained so much bacteria that users could become infected. Critics said the response was slow and faulty.

"Based on the Gleaner stories, what should have happened is that the bureau should have issued a public notice to all manufacturers and importers of toilet tissues to send a sample of their products to its offices as they were conducting bacteriological tests," one manufacturer said. "No standard has been set on bacterial levels for Jamaica, so they can't reject it because there is no test."
