Bus driver sentenced to death in Egypt

GIZA, Egypt, June 23 (UPI) -- A criminal court in Giza, Egypt, has given the death penalty to a bus driver who killed six colleagues.

Prosecutors said Arab contractor Mahmoud Suweilam was driving a bus carrying fellow workers to a job site when he stopped the vehicle and opened fire with a machine gun, killing six and injuring six others last July, the Egyptian newspaper al-Masry al-Youm reported.

Prosecutors called for the death penalty after a mental evaluation found Suweilam sane at the time of the shootings.

Suweilam admitted he wanted to kill one of his colleagues, whom he believed was excavating antiquities from beneath his home.

The report didn't say when the sentence, ordered by the court Wednesday, would be carried out, or if Suweilam can appeal.
