Former Los Angeles DA troubled by new claims in O.J. Simpson case

LOS ANGELES, June 10 (UPI) -- The former Los Angeles district attorney during the O.J. Simpson murder trial recently learned a detail about the case that troubles him, he said Thursday.

Gil Garcetti said in an interview on ABC's Good Morning America that L.A. prosecutors were "baited" into asking Simpson to try on the bloody leather glove found at the scene where Simpson's ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman were murdered.

When the glove didn't fit, defense attorney Johnnie Cochran stated perhaps the defining quote of the trial, "If it doesn't fit, you must acquit."

Garcetti said he knew the glove probably wouldn't fit, but only after being interviewed for the new ESPN documentary OJ: Made in America, did he found out why.

"He had probably been working out his hand, developing muscle in his hand, and we knew that the glove would shrink. It'd been in the elements. It's leather," he said.

"Simpson was taking arthritic medication for his hands and he was told, 'If you stop taking this arthritic medication, your hands will swell. Your joints will stiffen.' My God," Garcetti said.

A recent season of FX's American Crime Story, which dramatized the case, as well as a knife reportedly found at Simpson's former home earlier this year have brought the 1994 case back into the news.

The LAPD determined the knife was not connected to the murders.

The first episode of the five-part documentary premieres on ABC on Saturday.
