Funeral home allegedly switches bodies

PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Two Philadelphia families say they suffered traumatic experiences when a funeral home mistakenly sent two bodies to the wrong services.

The granddaughter of Kenneth Moore Roberts told WPVI-TV, Philadelphia, several grandchildren tried to tell funeral home employees at Monday's viewing that there had been a mistake.

"I told them it wasn't my grandpop; all his grandkids came in here and said that's not their grandpop," Kenayah Cerban said. "We know what my grandpop looked like, that wasn't him."

The James Hawkins Funeral Home only acknowledged Tuesday morning that there had been a mix-up, just before the funeral service was scheduled to start at Tindley Temple United Methodist Church.

At the Francis Funeral Home in Southwest Philadelphia, the daughters of Charles Beverly were having a similar experience.

The two funeral homes are both owned by Frankie Francis, WPVI said. The bodies apparently got switched during embalming at the Francis home, the report said.

Family members say Roberts' body arrived at the church in a coffin with an unfastened lid and an arm hanging out. The funeral service was postponed.
