LONDON, July 13 (UPI) -- British doctors who refuse to believe the 2003 death of whistle-blowing colleague David Kelly was a suicide say they want an inquest.
Kelly, a biological weapons expert and former Iraq weapons inspector, died from what was ruled a suicide shortly after being exposed as the source for a story claiming the British Ministry of Defense "probably knew" that claims about the supposedly advanced bioweapons capabilities of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein were untrue.
The Hutton Inquiry, which examined the circumstances of Kelly's death in a wooded area near his home, ruled in 2004 that Kelly had committed suicide by ingesting pills and cutting his left wrist. But a team of doctors who say they are unconvinced have compiled a dossier in which they claim that a cut to the ulnar artery in Kelly's wrist could not have killed him, The Daily Telegraph reported Monday.
"The bleeding from Dr. Kelly's ulnar artery is highly unlikely to have been so voluminous and rapid that it was the cause of death," they claim.
Attorneys for the doctors are preparing to invoke the Coroners Act to challenge a decision by the Hutton Inquiry to suspend the original inquest into Kelly's death, the Telegraph said.
