New college grads face gloomy job market

WASHINGTON, May 30 (UPI) -- Members of the college graduating class of 2009 face dim job prospects in the United States, analysts say.

The Christian Science Monitor reported Saturday that the Collegiate Employment Research Institute says the job market is a place of "quiet desperation."

The newspaper reported 7 percent of the companies surveyed say they won't hire anyone out of college this year. That is more than double the 2008 rate.

Moreover, nearly half of companies surveyed said they will hire fewer new college grads this year than in 2008.

"They're going to have to deal with a lot of rejection, and it's this generation ... that hasn't had to deal with much of that in their lifetime," said Caroline Ceniza-Levine of career consultant Six Figure Starts.
