Former Detroit first lady settles in Texas

DALLAS, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- Detroit's former first lady says she is starting her life over near Dallas after her husband was ousted from office over an affair and lying about it.

Carlita Kilpatrick said she has forgiven her husband, former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, and plans to stick with him, The Dallas Morning News reported Sunday.

"I'm ready to start anew," Carlita Kilpatrick told the newspaper. "I feel so wonderfully blessed ... to have the opportunity to move somewhere and start again."

Kwame Kilpatrick owes Detroit $1 million in restitution and is serving five years' probation. The newspaper noted he needs court approval to leave Michigan. A hearing is set for Tuesday to determine whether he can travel to Dallas for job training.

Carlita Kilpatrick, 38, moved to Texas in December. She said she hopes her husband can join her soon.

"You don't ever want a father to be away from his children or to be away from his wife," she said.
