Two airliners nearly collide in Tel Aviv

TEL AVIV, Israel, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- A Turkish Airlines plane and an Israir airliner came within less than 5,000 feet of each other at a Tel Aviv, Israel, airport, it was reported Friday.

The Israir plane had begun landing practice on instructions of the tower as the Turkish jet prepared to land on the same runway, The Jerusalem Post said. The flight inspector caught the mistake and was able to direct both planes to safe landings.

An Israeli Airport Authority official said the near-accident was caused by faulty judgment by the tower employee who told the Israir plane to land.

An investigative commission was established to examine the incident.
