U.S. terror camp suspect remanded in U.K.

LONDON, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- A Briton accused by the United States of trying to set up a terror camp in Oregon was remanded in custody by a British court Monday.

Haroon Rashid Aswat, 30, of Dewbury, West Yorkshire, was deported to Britain from Zambia Sunday and arrested by police when he arrived. He appeared before magistrates sitting at Belmarsh prison to face a U.S. extradition request, and was remanded until Thursday.

Aswat was arrested July 20 in Zambia on immigration charges and was held for two weeks before being deported.

U.S. authorities allege that between October 1999 and April 2000, Aswat attempted to set up a training camp in Bly, Ore., to train people to "fight jihad" in Afghanistan.

His family has urged the British government not to allow his extradition.

Human rights lawyer Gareth Peirce said that in light of the way U.S. authorities had treated British citizens in recent times, Aswat's family was fearful he could face torture.
