DeLay introduces pro-Israel resolution

WASHINGTON, June 22 (UPI) -- U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, introduced a congressional resolution Tuesday in support of President Bush's commitment to Israel.

The resolution, the House's No. 2 Republican said, is intended to reaffirm the statement of principles laying out the United States' continued support for Israel's self-defense contained in the president's April 14 letter to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

"The people of Israel should know the United States will never leave their side," DeLay said. "We will never expect them to retreat behind their 1949 borders, nor recognize any artificial right of return. Israel is fighting the same war on terror we are fighting, and we must support them in that fight."

The bi-partisan resolution, which carries House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Md., as the lead co-sponsor, is scheduled for consideration by the full House on Wednesday.
