Sniper trial shifts to suspects' arrest

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., Nov. 3 (UPI) -- The Virginia Beach, Va., trial of Washington-area sniper suspect John Allen Muhammad focused Monday on his arrest at a Maryland rest area.

The Washington Post reported FBI agents surrounded Muhammad's car and smashed out its tinted windows. The noise awakened Muhammad, who was lying on the back seat, and his alleged accomplice, Jamaican teenager Lee Boyd Malvo, who was stretched out on the front seat.

Muhammad officers his name was John Williams and Malvo was his son. Muhammad changed his name from Williams after he converted to Islam.

The car was reported to police by Whitney Donahue, a refrigerator repairman who was driving home to Pennsylvania early in the morning of Oct. 24, when he pulled into the rest area.

The capture of the two sniper suspects occurred fewer than 48 hours after bus driver Conrad Johnson became the 10th victim in the three-week-long string of sniper shootings.
