Russian delegate: Nukes not discussed

BEIJING, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Russia's chief delegate to the Beijing talks on North Korea's nuclear program said Thursday the issue hasn't come up.

Alexander Losyukov, the chief Russian delegate and deputy foreign minister, told the Novosti news agency the North Korean nuclear program "was not specifically discussed" during the six-nation negotiations.

Speaking about the negotiating sides' positions, Losyukov said there were common views, but also differences, first of all, between the United States and North Korea. The Russian and Chinese positions were the closest.

"Our experts think North Korea has no nuclear weapons and technology possession does not necessarily imply the presence of physical nuclear weapons," said Losyukov.

The news agency said the North Korean delegation maintains it had no ambition to build nuclear weapons and that it wanted the Korean Peninsula to remain a nuclear-free zone.
