Will Ferrell channels Ron Burgundy as MLS commentator

By Alex Butler

March 5 (UPI) -- Will Ferrell sat down with an ESPN broadcast crew, acting as Anchorman character Ron Burgundy, during the Seattle Sounders and Los Angeles FC game.

Ferrell sported LAFC gear, complete with a team scarf. The 50-year-old actor is part of LAFC's ownership group, which also includes celebrities Mia Hamm-Garciaparra, Nomar Garciaparra and Magic Johnson.

LAFC won its debut game 1-0 against the Sounders on Sunday at CenturyLink Field in Seattle, getting a goal from Diego Rossi in the 11th minute.

"It is wonderful to be here in the Emerald City, home of the Seattle Bounders football club," Burgundy said on the ESPN set. "Of course, founded in the year 1802 by the Germans...the Germans and the Haitians. It's going to be a very exciting match.

"Of course, you know midway through the second half, they will release a pack of wild coyotes onto the field. At which point, it is anyone's guess what will happen."

No coyotes were released onto the field, which is also home to the Seattle Seahawks.

Ferrell also said he is a "midfielder by trade" and he plays at a walk/jog pace.

"I've got a solid 20 minutes in me, I think of just hard fouls and hard tackles," Ferrell said.

Larry Berg is the lead managing owner of LAFC. Brandon Beck, Bennett Rosenthal, Peter Guber, Tom Penn, Henry Nguyen, Ruben Gnanalingam, Vincent Tan, Goodwin Gaw, Chad Hurley, Tucker Kain, Kirk Lacob, Mitch Lasky, Mark Leschly, Mike Mahan, Marc Merrill, Irwin Raij, Tony Robbins, Lon Rosen, Paul Schaeffer, Brandon Schneider, Allen Shapiro, Mark Shapiro, Jason Sugarman, Harry Tsao and Rick Welts are also part of the LAFC ownership group.

"What is my role on the team? I'm just the eye candy," Ferrell said in August 2016 at the LAFC's groundbreaking press conference. "I'm the show pony. These guys have done all of the heavy lifting. But I have found out I'm going to be head groundskeeper.

"I don't know anything about horticulture or plants, but I have two years to learn. It's going to be the best turf in the MLS, guaranteed."

Ferrell predicted an undefeated season in 2018. That prediction is looking good so far.
