Washington Football Team puts QB Ryan Fitzpatrick on IR with hip injury

Sept. 13 (UPI) -- The Washington Football Team placed starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick on injured reserve with a right hip subluxation, the team announced Monday.

WFT head coach Ron Rivera told reporters that it remains uncertain how long Fitzpatrick will remain on IR. The coach said the veteran signal-caller will visit with more doctors to determine the severity of the hip ailment.

Fitzpatrick will have to stay on injured reserve for at least three weeks. According to ESPN and NFL Media, he is expected to miss six to eight weeks due to the hip issue.

"I don't know much more about the injury other than he did 'sublux' it," Rivera said. "We're going to get a second opinion just to make sure on all the stuff we have. We're going to put him on IR and go from there."

Fitzpatrick suffered the injury on a second-quarter hit during Sunday's 20-16 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke replaced Fitzpatrick in the game.

Heinicke, who will start Thursday's matchup against the New York Giants, completed 11 of 15 throws for 122 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's defeat.

Kyle Allen will serve as Washington's No. 2 quarterback Thursday against the Giants. The team signed Kyle Shurmur to the practice squad, and he is expected to back up Allen.
