May 15 (UPI) -- The New York Jets have fired general manager Mike Maccagnan.

Jets chairman and CEO Christopher Johnson announced Maccagnan's dismissal on Wednesday. Maccagnan began his tenure as Jets general manager in 2015. Coach Adam Gase will take over as the Jets' acting general manager.

"This morning, I informed Mike that he was being relieved of his duties as general manager of the team, effective immediately," Johnson said in a news release. "Mike helped to execute the strategic vision of the organization during the last four seasons and especially the past few months. However, I came to the decision to make a change after much thought and a careful assessment of what would be in the best long-term interests of the New York Jets."

"I will start a search for our new general manager immediately. In the interim, coach [Adam] Gase will be the acting general manager. I would like to thank Mike for his time and efforts during his tenure, and I wish only the best for him and his wife Betty."

The Jets hired Gase in January, after he was fired by the Miami Dolphins. Gase joined the franchise following the firing of Todd Bowles, who coached the team for four seasons.

Maccagnan previously worked for the Washington Redskins and Houston Texans and had stops in the CFL and NFL Europe before joining the Jets' front office.

The Jets have more than $27 million in remaining salary cap space this off-season. Maccagnan was behind the wheel when the franchise signed star running back Le'Veon Bell, linebacker C.J. Mosley, wide receiver Jamison Crowder and others in free agency, in addition to completing the 2019 NFL Draft.
