Montay Crockett: Jacksonville Jaguars promote rookie WR, place Jaelen Strong on IR

Dec. 27 (UPI) -- The Jacksonville Jaguars have promoted rookie wide receiver Montay Crockett to the active roster.

Jacksonville also placed third-year wide receiver Jaelen Strong on injured reserve and signed wide receiver Tevaun Smith to the practice squad. The Jaguars announced the moves Wednesday morning.

Jacksonville now has 53 players on their active roster and a 10-man practice squad.

Crockett, 24, entered the NFL on May 5 as an undrafted free agent signing by the Green Bay Packers. He spent the last eight weeks of the season on the Jaguars' practice squad. He had one catch for 12 yards in three preseason appearances.

The 6-foot, 184-pound pass-catcher had 535 yards and three scores on 32 receptions at Georgia Southern. He also had 15 carries for 144 yards and two touchdowns in 47 collegiate contests.

Crockett was a two-time long jump state champion at South Point High School in Rock Hill, S.C. He was also led the football team to state titles in 2008 and 2011.

Smith, 24, entered the NFL last year as an undrafted free agent signing by the Indianapolis Colts. He played in two games in 2016 but failed to register a catch. Smith spent a week on the Oakland Raiders' practice squad this season before he was waived on Dec. 6.

Strong suffered a torn ACL in the Jaguars' loss on Sunday to the San Francisco 49ers.
