The New York Jets are making sweeping changes to their coaching staff.

While head coach Todd Bowles remains in place, Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey is retiring after a storied NFL coaching career and five assistants will not be returning to East Rutherford, N.J. next season.

"I informed Coach Bowles prior to the 2016 season that I would retire after this season," Gailey said in a statement Tuesday. "I thought it was best to tell him early, so that he could begin to think about how he would move the team forward on offense.

"While we did not have the season we all wanted to have, I think there are some great people here at the Jets and in the New York/New Jersey area. I wish them all the best moving forward."

Bowles informed quarterbacks coach Kevin Patullo, running backs coach Marcel Shipp, defensive line coach Pepper Johnson, outside linebackers coach Mark Collins and defensive backs coach Joe Danna of their dismissals on Tuesday.

"I appreciate all of their hard work and commitment and wish them the best," Bowles said.

--The San Diego Chargers requested to interview Kansas City Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Taub for their head-coaching vacancy, NFL Network reports.

Taub is also expected to be interviewed by the Denver Broncos, who are seeking a replacement for Gary Kubiak after his retirement.

The 54-year-old coordinator is drawing a "lot of interest," according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Taub has spent the last three seasons as the Chiefs' special teams boss after serving in the same role with the Chicago Bears from 2004-12.

--The Buffalo Bills are interested in discussing their vacant head-coaching position with Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich, multiple outlets reported.

Reich, 55, received high marks this season for his work with Philadelphia rookie quarterback Carson Wentz. He spent the previous two seasons as offensive coordinator of the Chargers.

Reich also interviewed for the Buffalo head-coaching job following the 2014 campaign before the Bills hired Rex Ryan, who was recently fired after two seasons.

Reich was a backup quarterback for the Bills from 1985-94, sitting behind Hall of Famer Jim Kelly during the team's run of reaching four consecutive Super Bowls.

--The San Francisco 49ers plan to interview Washington Redskins offensive coordinator Sean McVay next Monday for the team's head coaching vacancy, multiple media outlets reported.

McVay will not turn 31 until Jan. 24 and would be the youngest NFL head coach in the modern era if he is hired by the 49ers. He was 28 when he landed his current job.

San Francisco is looking for a replacement for Chip Kelly, who was fired after one season in which the 49ers went 2-14.
