The San Diego Chargers are on the verge of signing versatile Dexter McCluster on the heels of losing running back Danny Woodhead to a season-ending torn ACL injury, according to multiple reports Tuesday.

McCluster was released by Tennessee on the last round of cuts during the preseason, ending his run with the Titans after just two seasons. The 28-year-old would see a familiar face in former Tennessee coach Ken Whisenhunt, who is now the Chargers' offensive coordinator.

McCluster, who would serve as a change-of-pace back, would join fellow running backs Melvin Gordon, Kenneth Farrow, Andrew Williams and fullback Derek Watt on San Diego's roster.

McCluster enjoyed his best season in 2013, earning Pro Bowl honors after leading the NFL with two punt returns for touchdowns as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs. He wrapped up his time in Tennessee with 247 rushing yards and 260 receiving in 2015.

Woodhead was placed on injured reserve Monday, one day after sustaining an ACL injury against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He led all NFL running backs in receptions last year and is the second crucial player in as many weeks to be lost for the season.
