New England Patriots Bill Belichick on QB: 'I'm a football coach. I'm not a doctor'

Infamous for his selective syntax in press conference settings, New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick on Tuesday reminded the media that, unlike Leonard H. "Bones" McCoy on Star Trek, he is not a doctor.

Belichick is in his third day of redirecting questions about what the Patriots will do at quarterback Thursday night against the Houston Texans after Jimmy Garoppolo, starting in place of suspended Tom Brady, left the Week 2 win over the Miami Dolphins with a shoulder injury.

"I'm a football coach. I'm not a doctor," Belichick said. "Medical staff is the medical staff. I coach the team, medical people handle the injuries. They don't call plays, I don't do surgeries. We have a great deal here. It works out."

Garoppolo was diagnosed with a sprained AC joint in his right, throwing shoulder.

Rookie third-round pick Jacoby Brissett, drafted 91st overall in April, is likely to start against the Texans. Houston arrives with a streak of six quarters without a touchdowns against Chicago and Kansas City.

Brissett was picked two selections before the Cleveland Browns moved up for Southern Cal quarterback Cody Kessler. The Dallas Cowboys selected Mississippi State's Dak Prescott 135th overall.

Brissett replaced Garoppolo in Week 2 and completed 6 of 9 passes.

The 23-year-old has plenty of support from notable football figures, including Brady, former Patriots offensive coordinator Charlie Weis and former Patriots head coach Bill Parcells.

"I'm a big Jacoby fan. I love the kid. It didn't surprise me at all that he went in there and had composure," Weis told the Boston Herald. "I know one thing, the guy who's probably going to be the most ready out of all of them for Jacoby to count on, is Jacoby. He has a lot of confidence in himself."

Weis recruited and coached Brissett at University of Florida in 2011. He also helped prepare Brady behind Drew Bledsoe in 2001.

"Between that head coach and that offensive coordinator and that staff, they know what Jacoby's capable of doing at this time," he added. "They've got plenty of evidence. The kid played a whole bunch in preseason. He's got a whole bunch of reps.

"I'm sure Jacoby is going to do his job for them to win," Weis said. "But more than anything, I think this is a perfect Bill situation."
