Boston Celtics, Josh Richardson reach agreement on 1-year extension

Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Boston Celtics swingman Josh Richardson has agreed to a one-year contract extension with the franchise.

League sources told ESPN and The Athletic on Monday that Richardson's one-year extension is worth $12 million. He had one year and $11.5 million remaining on his contract, which now runs through the 2022-23 NBA season.

The Celtics acquired Richardson from the Dallas Mavericks last month by using the remainder of the trade exception created by the sign-and-trade agreement that sent All-Star forward Gordon Hayward to the Charlotte Hornets last year.

In 59 games (56 starts) for the Mavericks last season, the 27-year-old Richardson averaged 12.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists.

The Miami Heat selected Richardson in the second round (No. 40 overall) of the 2015 draft out of the University of Tennessee.

Since entering the league, Richardson has averaged 12.3 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.1 steals across 373 career games. In the 2018-19 campaign, he averaged career bests in points (16.6), assists (4.1) and rebounds (3.6).

That was his final season as a member of the Heat, who traded him to the Philadelphia 76ers in July 2019 as part of a package for star forward Jimmy Butler. The 76ers later moved him to the Mavericks in November 2020 in a deal for Seth Curry.
