Brawl costs Detroit Tigers' Miguel Cabrera, New York Yankees' Gary Sanchez, others

Detroit Tigers standout Miguel Cabrera was suspended seven games due to inciting the bench-clearing brawl during Thursday's game against the visiting New York Yankees.

Cabrera shoved Yankees catcher Austin Romine and threw punches at him to start the first of three bench-clearing incidents, and he received the stiffest penalty of the suspensions and fines announced Friday by Joe Torre, Chief Baseball Officer for Major League Baseball.

Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez and Tigers reliever Alex Wilson each received four-game suspensions. Sanchez was disciplined for fighting, which included him throwing multiple punches.

"I'm definitely not going to feel good about that," Sanchez said through an interpreter. "It's going to be four games that I'm not going to be able to help the team and I know they need me, so it's not a good feeling.

"...I went out there to defend my teammate, my team. Definitely the situation got out of control a little bit there but at the end of it all, what you're trying to do is you're trying to go out there and protect your team."

Wilson's penalty was for intentionally throwing a pitch at New York's Todd Frazier after warnings were in place for both sides.

Romine received a two-game suspension for his actions, which included throwing punches at Cabrera.

"I still think I was defending myself," Romine said. "Obviously we're going to appeal it."

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus was suspended for one game due to Wilson's action while a warning was in place.

Cabrera, Sanchez, Wilson, Romine and Ausmus were also fined, as were Yankees manager Joe Girardi, Yankees bench coach Rob Thomson, Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner and Yankees pitcher Tommy Kahnle. Detroit shortstop Jose Iglesias also was fined.

Two injured New York players, first baseman Garrett Cooper and outfielder Clint Frazier, were fined for entering the field while being on the disabled list.

The Tigers won the game 10-6.
