New York Yankees option pitcher Jordan Montgomery to Triple-A

One day after New York Yankees rookie Jordan Montgomery gave up just three hits and one run in five innings in a 2-1 Yankees victory at Cleveland, the left-hander was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday.

The Yankees acquired Sonny Gray and Jaime Garcia earlier this month, and general manager Brian Cashman said the team plans to use both as starting pitchers.

Since manager Joe Girardi does not intend to use a six-man rotation, Montgomery was the odd man out.

Montgomery, 24, had surprising success in spring training, earning him a spot in the rotation. He is 7-6 with a 4.05 ERA in 21 starts, and he did not get a decision on Saturday, when he struck out seven and walked none. The only run he allowed the Indians came on a home run by Carlos Santana.

The Yankees' rotation now will include CC Sabathia, Masahiro Tanaka, Luis Severino, Gray and Garcia.

The Yankees have not publicly set an innings limitation for Montgomery, but he has thrown 115 2/3 innings this season. His career high as a pro was 152 last season in the minors, and that included postseason play.
