The New York Yankees placed designated hitter Matt Holliday on the 10-day disabled list Sunday with a left lumbar strain.

It is the second time this season the 37-year-old Holliday has been put on the DL. The move is retroactive to Saturday.

Manager Joe Girardi told reporters that Holliday tweaked the lower side of his back.

Holliday was first sidelined on June 28 with a viral infection. Since his return after the All-Star break, he is just 11-for-81 (.136) with one home run and two doubles.

Holliday was batting .262 with 15 homers and 47 RBIs in the first half of the season, but he now stands at .229 with 16 homers and 51 RBIs in 88 games.

In a corresponding move, the Yankees recalled first baseman Garrett Cooper from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Cooper, 26, is batting .240 (6-for-25) with one RBI in eight games with the Yankees. He is hitting .357 with 17 homers and 82 RBIs over 77 games in the minors this season.
