Los Angeles Dodgers re-sign Chase Utley, bring in two more

Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Six-time All-Star Chase Utley is returning to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2017.

The 38-year-old second baseman first signed with the Dodgers in 2015 and was granted free agency this offseason. He cashed in for $7 million last season, after making at least $15 million annually from 2010 through 2015.

Utley's deal with the Dodgers is for one-year, according to reports. The Dodgers also brought in former Seattle Mariners outfielder Franklin Gutierrez Friday, in addition to former San Francisco Giants pitcher Sergio Romo.

Utley, who hit .252 last season, will return to a role on the bench after the Dodgers added Logan Forsythe this offseason in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays. Utley won a World Series with the 2008 Philadelphia Phillies and owns a career .278 batting average with 250 home runs in 14 seasons for the Phillies and Dodgers.

The free agent had been a hot name this offseason before the signing. Jon Heyman reported in December that the Los Angeles Angels and Cleveland Indians were a possibility for the former All-Star. Heyman added that he had "multiple offers" on the table. FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported that Utley had narrowed down his choices to four contending teams, before deciding to come back to the Dodgers.
