French Open: Nick Kyrgios withdraws from tournament

May 24 (UPI) -- Nick Kyrgios, who is ranked as the 36th-best men's tennis player in the world, withdrew from the French Open on Friday.

A reason for Kyrgios' withdrawal was not provided as of Friday morning, according to ESPN. Some media reports indicated he was ill.

Kyrgios, 24, was defaulted and fined at the Italian Open last week. Trailing against Norweigan Casper Rudd, Kyrgios slammed his racket and kicked a water bottle. He also threw a white chair onto the court.

Kyrgios was not suspended for the outburst. He recently posted a video online saying the French Open "sucks" when compared to Wimbledon.

The Australian is no stranger to controversy. Kyrgios was accused of "tanking" during the 2015 Wimbledon Championships.

Kyrgios was suspended later that year for inappropriate comments directed at opponent Stan Wawrinka.

Kyrgios has a 141-82 career singles record.
