The Cincinnati Bengals acquired rookie cornerback KeiVarae Russell on waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday.

Second-year guard Trey Hopkins was waived by the Bengals to open a roster spot for Russell, who was a third-round selection by Kansas City in the 2016 draft.

"We felt it was the best thing to do for the Chiefs right now," coach Andy Reid told reporters of the team parting ways with a high draft pick.

Russell recorded seven tackles during the preseason, but was inactive for last week's regular-season opener against the AFC West-rival San Diego Chargers. He collected 60 tackles, two interceptions and two forced fumbles during his final season at Notre Dame.

Hopkins was also inactive for the Bengals during last week's season-opening game versus the New York Jets.
